McCarthy’s Castle, also known as Ballinskelligs Castle was a tower house built in the 16th Century by McCarthy Mór with a view to protect the bay from pirates, and it is believed it may also have been used to collect a tariff on incoming trade ships. A number of these Tower houses were built all around the Cork and Kerry Coasts by McCarthy Mór.
